A is for Apple

This is the first post of my "ABC's for Losing Weight". Hopefully each week I will post on the next letter of the alphabet and that letter will have something to do with losing weight.

This week it is all about Apples. I have been reading a lot about apples recently. Even in Weight Watchers our leader told us that they are coming out with a new program next week and they have been sworn to secrecy about it, but one thing she told us is that you eat apples. So I decided to do some research on apples.

If you go here, here, or here you can read all about apples.  Most of them recommend that you eat three apples a day.  That's 21 apples a week and almost 100 in a month.  I don't know about you, but I think I would get sick of them if I ate that many!  So, I have started out eating a half of an apple mid-morning, the other half mid-afternoon and then a small container of applesauce after my evening workout.  It seems to satisfy my sweet tooth and curb my appetite.

My favorite apple so far is the Honey Crisp.  It is sweet, firm and tart all rolled in to one!

So eat an apple a day and keep the doctor away and hopefully a few pounds too!

Weighing In

This blog post has been the most difficult so far. I knew exactly what the title was going to be and I knew exactly what I wanted to write about, but I have written and erased it several times. I guess just as losing weight is difficult, so is writing about it.

I started going to Weight Watchers 9 weeks ago. This is probably my fifth or sixth time of joining WW. I have been successful in the past with the program, so that is why I decided to go with them again. A co-worker also joined. We weigh in every Tuesday during lunch. I have lost 6.4 pounds. That averages out to a loss of about .7 per week. Not that great, but at least I am losing.

I know what my problem is. I like food. No, I LOVE food. I love to cook it. I love to eat it. I love to go out to eat. I love sweets. I love chocolate. I love margaritas. I drink. I eat.

I am hoping this blog will help me with my weight loss too. I noticed that on Erin's blog she is doing "ABC's of Happiness". With each letter of the alphabet she tells what makes her happy that begins with that letter. So I have decided to sort of steal her idea to help with my weight loss, but with a little different approach. There are 26 letters in the alphabet. So each week I am going to blog on a different letter. It will have something to do with weight loss, exercise, recipes, etc. It will take 26 weeks to get through the whole alphabet. That's 6 months. Hopefully at the end of those 26 weeks I will be at my goal weight. It's worth a try!

Award Winning Chili

I am quite proud to say that I took the top honors last night at Pax Christi's annual chili cook-off. They had a panel of three judges and the judges did not know who made the chili. They put the chili in seperate bowls and put numbers on the bowls and then took those bowls to the judges. Only one person had the master list of who the chili belonged to. One of the judges came in 3rd place with her own chili! She said she didn't even realize it was her chili when she was tasting it......hmmmm.....I think there were approximately 30 chilis there. So there was a wide variety.
I have had several people ask me for the recipe. If you watch The Food Network I cook like Rachel Ray. Well, I guess I shouldn't say I cook like her, because I am not that good, but I really don't measure things. I sort of "eyeball it" like she does....So I am going to do my best to guess correctly here on the measurements. I am not as organized as Mandy is either, so you won't find the step by step pictures like she does.  Maybe one of these days.......

1 lb. extra lean ground beef
1 lb. italian sausage (I use HOT)
1 medium white or yellow onion, chopped
3-4 tablespoons chili powder
1-2 teaspoons cumin
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
pinch of cayenne pepper
3-15.5 oz. chili hot beans
1-12 oz. tomato paste
2-14.5 oz. petite diced tomatoes with green chilies
1 bottle lite beer
1 bottle of Bloody Mary mix (I use Mr. & Mrs. T)

In a large pot start browning the sausage and ground beef. When it is almost done add the onion and half of the spices (2 tablespoons chili powder, 1 teaspoon cumin, 1/2 tablespoon garlic powder, 1/2 tablespoon onion powder, 1/2 tablespoon black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, and the pinch of cayenne pepper). Stir frequently until meat is brown and the onion is softened. Add the bottle of beer, cover with lid and let simmer over low/medium heat for about 30 minutes. Add the two cans of diced tomatoes and the remaining spices (2 tablespoons chili powder, 1 teaspoon cumin, 1/2 tablespoon garlic powder, 1/2 tablespoon onion powder, 1/2 tablespoon black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes). Cover and simmer an additional 30 minutes. Add the tomato paste, chili beans, and bloody mary mix. The amount of bloody mary mix that you use will depend on how thick or thin you want your chili. Let this cook an additional hour or so. ENJOY!!!

Creating A Blog Name

Who knew that creating a blog name would be so difficult? I had an easier time naming my children! Seriously!

The problem is finding one that is unique. One that isn't already taken. One that people will remember.

I decided to turn to friends blogs to see what they came up with.

First stop was Erin's
A Little Bit Of Everything. I absolutely LOVE the name she picked out. It fits my blog perfectly, but I can't steal it from her....can I???

Next was MR's
The Crotchety Old Man. Hmmmm....I could be The Crotchety Old Woman. I am Crotchety, but I am not OLD (even though MR and I graduated the same year-maybe he was held back A LOT!).

Mandy has
The Lucky 7. If I only count the ones that live in this house that only adds up to 3. Guess we could be The Lucky 3, but that doesn't sound right.

Absepa's blog is
The Nerd In The Corner. We all know that I am not a NERD! I really don't think Absepa is either, but I do love the name of her blog!

You know by the name of Tamara's blog exactly what you are getting!
Wine Time With Tamara! Love it!!! We might be able to fit a little bit of wine time in my blog. Actually I am sure we can fit a lot of wine time in my blog!

But I needed something unique. Something that was all mine. Something as creative as what my friends had come up with. Do you have any idea how hard that is?? I wrote names down. Checked to see if they were available. Nope. Wrote more names down. Checked. Nope. Over and over again. Finally. The perfect name. I hope you will enjoy A Little Time With Me.

Y Pam
