Little Old Ladies

As most of you know, my mom fell on December 10, 2010 and suffered a severe brain injury.  She is now in a nursing facility because she is unable to walk on her own and cannot take care of herself.

We go to visit her about 4-5 times a week.  When we go during the week it is after I get off work, so we usually arrive about the time they are going to the dining room to eat.

I have to tell you I have overheard some wonderful conversations between some of the residents there.

The population is mainly elderly women between the ages of 70 and 100.  Yes, there is a 100 year old woman there and she gets around better than I do sometimes!  I would guess that there is probably 1 man for every 25 women there.

The men mainly talk about sports and sometimes the talking can get heated!!

A conversation that I hear between two ladies that sit at the table behind my mom is usually about the same every day.  I had to share with you all because I think it is the sweetest thing.

Lady #1:  Have you eaten at this restaurant before?
Lady #2:  Oh yes, we come here almost every day.

Lady #1:  Do they have good food?
Lady #2:  Yes and if you don't like what they bring out just tell them and they will get you something else.

Lady #1:  I don't have my purse with me.
Lady #2:  That's okay.  They will just bill you.

Lady #1:  I hope my daughter can find me.  She dropped me off at the door.
Lady #2:  Yes, my husband usually ends up sitting at another table because it gets so crowded.  (Her husband died a few years ago...)

After they finish eating:
Lady #1:  Be careful going home.
Lady #2:  You too dear.  

Tomorrow they will not remember that they had this conversation.......

Weigh In Sunday #6 August 26, 2012

I have come to the conclusion that I am my own worst enemy.   No matter how hard I try to diet and exercise I can always come up with an excuse not to.  It's like I have an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other.  The angel is telling me to diet and exercise, but that devil tempts me with food and gives me reasons that I shouldn't exercise.

Of course, this week the devil won.  Seems like the devil is always winning though.  So, I have decided to make a deal with the devil!  Actually, what I am going to do is have a little talk with that devil.  And, yes, I know I will be talking to myself, but that's okay.  There's nothing wrong with talking to yourself!  I'm probably more likely to listen to myself than to someone else.

I also came across a few dieting tips today.  They were both in my Prevention magazine.  The first one said that dieters who eat dessert with breakfast my lost more weight than those who don't.  Two groups were instructed to eat the same number of calories daily-the difference was that one group ate a small treat after a protein-rich breakfast.  Those who indulged lost nearly 40 pounds more, on average, than the others!  Researchers think the sweets provide a lasting serotonin surge that diminishes cravings throughout the day.  So take that devil!  I'm going to have to dessert with breakfast and still lose weight!

The second article I read said a 5-foot-4 woman who weighs 160 pounds may be healthier and live longer than one who tips the scales at 100.  Being obese is unhealthy, but just a little extra weight gives you more infection-fighting white blood cells without raising other risks too high.  Another kick in the gut Mr. Devil!

So, having said all of that, I won't be weighing in this week.  Even Weight Watchers gives you a "free" week.  So I am using that this week.

I know next weekend is a holiday weekend and my father-in-laws 80th birthday, but I will just save my piece of birthday cake and have it after breakfast the next day!!

Weigh In Sunday #5 August 19, 2012

Sorry, I know this is a little late, but I just haven't had the time to sit down and write this post!  I did weigh on Sunday and I have that picture for you. 

Let me just say that last week was a very, very, very bad week for me!  I had a migraine on Monday and it was still around on Wednesday.  I went to the ER Wednesday afternoon and they gave me fluids and a drug "cocktail" through an IV.  I definitely felt better when I left, but the migraine was still there.  It didn't completely go away until Thursday afternoon. 

I didn't go to the gym at all last week and my food choices weren't that great either.

So here you go:

Initial Weigh-In: 155.0
Last Weigh-In: 149.5
This Weigh-In: 152.0

That's a 2.5 pound gain for the week, but I am still down 3 pounds. 

It's time to kick this fat in the butt and get down to business.  I went to the gym after work and did 20 minutes on the Elliptical and 30 minutes on the treadmill.  I also did the weight room.  Take that fat!

My Shopping Trip

As most of you know, I love coupons, sales and saving money.  I have been using coupons for about a year now and although I am still not a pro at it ,I am getting better.

There is a lot to learn when it comes to coupons and saving money and I think I learn something new every week!  Some people think that all you have to do is cut coupons out of the paper and take them to the store with you, but there is so much more to it than that.  You have to look at all the sales and find what store has the best price and/or best incentive and use the coupon there.  I know a lot of you are thinking it takes too much time, but it really doesn't.  You just need to find a few blogs to follow and they will do most of the work for you!

My favorite coupon blogs are The Krazy Coupon Lady, One Frugal Chick, SouthernSavers, and Bluegrass Savers. These are just a few of my favorite.  There are probably 1,000's of them out there, so just look around and find a few of your favorite to follow.  Once you start following them, you'll get a better understanding of sales, coupons and incentives.

I usually go to Walgreen's, CVS and Rite-Aid about once a week.  Sometimes more just depending on the sales and if I missed something the first time around.  I try to go at the beginning of the week, but sometimes I don't get around to it until the end of the week.  That is what happened this week.  I had a migraine almost all week, so I didn't do a lot of looking or shopping.  Finally on Saturday I sat down with the computer and stalked the other blogs for about an hour and found the best deals.  I thought I would share with you my shopping trip.  This is what was on sale last week, so it's too late for you to get the same deals (maybe).  Sometimes they run the same deals a few weeks at a time, so you will just have to do some stalking like I did.

My first stop was Rite-Aid.  They had Halls Cough Drops on sale for $1.50 each (they are usually $1.99 each) and when you bought 2 you received a $1 Up Reward (these print off at the bottom of your receipt and you can use them on your next purchase to get $1 off or whatever the amount is).  I also used a coupon for $1/2.  They had Listerine Mouthwash for $3.99 and when you bought 1 you received $1 Up Reward.  I had two coupons for the mouthwash.  One was $1/1 manufacturers coupons and the other was $1/1 Adperk coupon (these are Rite-Aid coupons that you get from their website and you have to watch a little video to get the coupon).  I also bought Purell Hand Sanitizer for $3.59 and when you bought 1 you received $2 Up Reward.  My last item there was Oral B Glide Floss, regular $4.49, on sale for $3.49 and when you buy 1 you receive a $2 Up Reward.  I did three separate transactions.  First transaction was the Purell hand Sanitizer, on sale for $3.59, I used a $1/1 coupon and I used a $2 Up Reward that I had from last week.  That brought my total out of pocket (OOP) to .81 and I received another $2 Up Reward.  My second transaction was for the floss.  It was regular $4.49, on sale for $3.49, I had a .75/1 coupon and I used the $2 Up Reward from my first transaction.  My total OOP was .95 and I received another $2 Up Reward.  My last transaction I bought 2 halls cough drops, regular $1.99, on sale for $1.50 and I used $1/2 coupon.  I also purchase mouthwash, regular $5.79, on sale for $3.99 and I had 2 $1/1 coupons.  I also used the $2 Up Reward from the previous transaction and that brought my total to $3.02 and I received 2 $1 Up Rewards.  My total OOP at Rite-Aid was $4.78 and I still have $2 in Up Rewards left and I bought $18.25 worth of products.  I saved $13.47!  Not bad!!!

My second stop was at Walgreens.  My first transaction I bought a toothbrush, regular 4.19, on sale for 2.99, had a $1/1 coupon and received a $1 Register Reward.  I also purchase Herbal Essences Shampoo and Conditioner, regular price 3.99, on sale for 3.00, used a $3/2 coupon and received a $1 RR.  I also used a $3 RR from a previous transaction and my total OOP for this transaction was $2.53 and I have 2 $1 RR for a future purchase.  My second transaction was for 2 Scope Mouthwash, regular price 4.29, on sale for 2.25 and I had a $1.50/2 coupon.  I also purchased crest toothpaste, regular price 3.99, on sale for 2.25 and I had a $1.50/2 coupon.  I also used the 2 $1 RR from previous transaction and my total OOP was 4.54 and I have a $3 RR and a $1 RR to use for a future transaction.  My total OOP at Walgreens was $7.07 and I still have $4 in RR left and I bought $28.73 worth of products.  I saved $21.66!

My final stop CVS.  I only purchased one thing there, a Venus Razor.  It was $14.99 regular price, on sale for 9.99 and I had a $4 coupon and a $1.50 CVS coupon.  My total OOP was 5.00 and I received a $4 Extra Buck to be used on a future order.

Weigh In Sunday #4 August 12, 2012

It's that time again.  This past week hasn't been great as far as diet and exercise goes.  I just haven't been able to really get motivated, but I still somehow lost. 

This week is definitely going to be different.  I am going to take healthy lunches to work and I am going to eat them.  I went to the store today and bought things to make yummy salads.  Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, celery, almonds, turkey and shredded cheese.  I also bought some cottage cheese, soups and stuff to make sandwiches.

I have also decided that I am going to get up early and start running again.  I love to run, but have just gotten out of the habit.  That is going to change.  I will also go to the gym three times during the work and hopefully will go to two classes at the gym in the evening. 

The only bad thing I have going for me this week is Wallace's Wacky Wednesday.  I used to work at Wallace's and some of still get together the third Wednesday of every month.  We drink, eat and enjoy each other's company.  Did I mention we drink and eat A LOT????  Hopefully all that exercising will help!

Here's my weigh in for this week:

I am back in the 140's!!  Yes, I know only by half a pound, but I'll take it!!!  That makes a total loss of 5.5 pounds!  SWEET!!! 

Hopefully all the exercise and dieting this week will take a few more pounds off!

Weigh In Sunday #3 August 5, 2012

I have a stomach bug or something and feel like total sh!t, so this post will be very short and sweet.

I gained 1.5 pounds, but I am still down 3 pounds, so I will take it.  I am sure when I weigh in the morning I will be down, because I haven't been able to keep anything down today.  I am hoping it's just a 24-hour bug and will be gone in the morning.
